Ashfield U3A Walking Group 'A'

We offer moderate walks from 7 miles to 9 miles, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

Please note that walks may have to be changed at short notice due to adverse weather conditions or for other reasons.

Please do not bring dogs or children on the walks, which are over all types of terrain. Walkers should therefore be prepared for stiles and rough ground as well as mud. Remember that weather conditions can deteriorate very quickly, with little or no warning, particularly on high ground, so be prepared. We walk throughout the year, so we suggest the following items, some of which are seasonal:

  • Comfortable waterproof boots suitable for rough terrain
    TRAINERS ARE NOT SUITABLE!
  • Waterproof clothing (e.g. cagoul and overtrousers)
  • Small rucksack
  • Packed lunch plus drinks (extra drinks for very hot days)
  • Light waterproof mat or stout carrier bag (to sit on)
  • Spare bootlace (a map of the area would also be useful)
  • Small, personal first-aid kit, including crepe bandage
  • Spare pullover, woolly hat, gloves
  • Change of footwear (essential for return car journeys)

All Walking Group "A" members are given a more detailed programme with start point details and phone number of walk leaders. Newcomers are requested to contact the Co-ordinator or Deputy Co-ordinator.

Lifts are by arrangement, so may we suggest a voluntary donation of £4.00 by each passenger to the driver.

Should anyone have to leave the walk for whatever reason, then the walk leader must be informed for safety reasons. Please note that all walkers walk at their own risk.

After the walk, why not round off the day by enjoying a relaxing drink with everyone at a local hostelry or coffee shop?

For more details, contact the co-ordinators, David & Julia Porter, by telephone: 01623-620892.
Len Hill has been appointed as deputy co-ordinator for the group: 01623-437726.

Isle of Wight Walk
On 17 January 2011, 48 members and friends of Walking Group 'A' went on a 5 day walking holiday to the Isle of Wight. There was something for everyone to enjoy - both long walks and shorter walks, a visit to Osbourne House and sight-seeing around the island. In the usual U3A fashion a great time was had by all. The icing on the cake was the wonderful winter sunshine. The photo shows some of the walkers at the trig point on Shanklin Down.

Christmas Walk
This took place on 14 December 2010 when 26 stalwart walkers braved the snow and ice for their annual Christmas walk around Cromford, the High Peak Trail and the canal. This was followed by an excellent Christmas lunch at the Market Place Restaurant in Cromford, where the walkers were joined by other members and friends.

Summer Walk
This took place on 08 June 2010 when 24 intrepid walkers had a most enjoyable time hiking the 9 mile length of the Malvern Hills. After very heavy rain during the journey by minibus, miraculously the sun appeared enabling us to appreciate the fantastic views over to the Black Mountains in the West and the Cotswolds to the East. The day concluded with a meal at a local hostelry. Many thanks to Len Hill for organising such a great day out.
